Continue reading »]]> Two of the major featurephones announced at Mobile World Congress go head to head.

In Barcelona this month both Nokia and Samsung announced new smartphones with an added twist. Nokia’s PureView 808 is a mid-range smartphone that boasts a 41 megapixel camera. Undoubtedly the best camera to be heading onto the market with a smartphone attached it’s like to create a stir. Meanwhile Samsung revamped a model it first released two years ago with the Galaxy Beam; a smartphone with added projector. Neither feature is directly comparable but if you fancy a device with added bells and whistles, which should you go for?

In terms of look and feel the Beam is smaller and also weighs less than the PureView. Its body is 12.5 mm and it weighs under 150grams. The PureView, in comparison measures 13.9 mm and weighs just less than 169 grams. The huge camera sensor is responsible for that added weight.

Both devices are armed with 4 inch displays. This is standard for the new devices launched in 2012. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a device that’s focusing on projection and quality of image the galaxy beam comes with a better screen resolution at 480 x 800 on a Super AMOLED screen. The PureView, in comparison is 360 x 640 and is just an AMOLED touchscreen. The screen quality of the PureView has led to some raised eyebrows considering the power and capability of the camera. Some might have expected a screen to match.

The Galaxy Beam comes with a 1GHz A9 processor and 6GB of RAM. The PureView on the other hand comes with a 1.3 GHz processor and 1GB of ROM and 512 MB of RAM. The processor might be more powerful on the Nokia but will the lack of RAM hamper its speed? The Samsung device comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich coming with the rest of the galaxy line-up. Nokia runs its own MeeGo operating system on the PureView.

The Samsung is somewhat limited in terms of storage as it only allows a maximum of 8GB of internal memory. On the Nokia there is 16GB with the added option of a micro SD card increasing to 32 GB.

Battery life will be the thing that clinches either of these devices. The Galaxy Beam comes with a Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery that Samsung says will last a few hours if you have the projector running. The PureView, in comparison has a Li-Ion 1400 mAh battery. It’s unlikely the capability and the length of time either device will really last for will become clear until the phones have been on the market for a while. It’s only through users testing and trying them out day after day than you get a real insight. The projector is likely to sap the battery power of the Beam but what damage a 41 megapixel will do to a smartphone’s battery life is anyone’s guess.

The Beam’s projector is capable of 15 lumen of brightness meaning you can expect a decent sized projection on any surface be it screen, ceiling or table top. It’s a nice feature that works as well at home as in the office. Sharing a range of media in a creative way is a good addition to the Galaxy range. The PureView 41 megapixel camera uses high-res sensors along with Carl Zeiss optics. The lack of storage space on the device means images will need to be downloaded direct to a computer or tablet to share and store.

Both are reasonable mid-range smartphones with great features than just go to show how far boundaries are being pushed by manufacturers to help them stand out. The Beam might edge it in terms of storage but the Nokia will be a little faster. It all comes down to whether you want a new projector, or a whopping digital camera on the back of your phone.
